As you can read on Marcel’s blog, he’s started his polyphasic sleep experiment. I’m typing this while sitting in his living room, because he’s taking a 20-minute nap. I arrived here around four o clock and so far, from a spectator’s point of view, I don’t really see any changes in his behaviour. Well, he laughs at almost all of my jokes, maybe that’s a sign 😉
I expect to see the real effects of this experiment in 20 minutes, “Status: Zombie” will probably kick in. Also, nights are becoming more difficult for him, so somewhere tonight I’ll probably notice. Now, it’s a matter of figuring out when I myself am going to sleep, because he’s waay over there in poly-land and I’m still in mono-land. And although I can sleep during the 3 hours and 40 minutes that he’s awake, there’s this issue of keeping him awake (which I can’t do if I’m sleeping myself) but also of getting enough sleep myself.
I’m used to sleeping for 9,5 hours a night. Yes, you read that right, 9,5 hours. But ever since Marcel has been talking about his sleep experiment, I’ve been cutting that down to 8 to 8,5 hours on weekdays myself. I used to think I needed all that sleep, but I can function just fine on 8,5 hours, so it’s just a luxury problem I guess. I’m planning on sticking to this in any case, because I already have more time in the evenings (Quote myself: “I have evenings again, yay!” :D). And I do see why “i wanna switch to polyphasic”-folks want to switch to this. Of course, I allow myself to sleep in on sundays, so if there’s an adaptation period to this, it will be significantly longer than when you’re not sleeping in, or oversleeping as the poly-folks call it. But it’s also less painful 😛 In half a year or so, if I still sleep 8 to 8,5 hours a night, maybe I’ll see about cutting that down to 7,5 to 8, who knows. I’m not overly ambitious. I do like such experiments though and later tonight, we’ll see how well I can program my body.
You see, last week, I claimed that I would make myself wake up on Friday morning before my alarm clock. Mind you, my daily rhythm has been screwed for over two weeks. I can’t say for sure whether it’s a remnant of my biological clock, coincidence or really programming my body, but friday morning I woke up at 7:30, while my alarm was set to 8:00. I tried it again on Saturday, and that time I woke up at 7:10 while my alarm was set to 8:30. This morning, of course, I slept in ;P
Tonight, we’ll try to see if I can make my body sleep for 20 minutes and wake up again after those 20 minutes are over, preferably without Marcel’s annoying light and alarms 😛 😉 I’m guessing not, but who knows 😛
